Floppy wipers

The wipers on my '62 Minor have become very floppy and have lots of 'play', which means they overshoot the sides of the windscreen and when they go down again they slap the windscreen rubber, where notches are beginning to form. Is it just the wiper arm spindle gear? Or is it the drive cable? Or both?

Make sure that the nuts on the spindles are done up good and tight first of all.If the nuts haven't been moved in years, then
drip some oil/ WD40 / ideally PlusGas penetrating oil and leave it for a while, before attempting to move them.

Maybe the rubber wedge/ angled mountings through the bodywork are deteriorating / loosing their flexibility, no longer able to maintain grip ?

Third ( most likely ) possibility is that the gear's teeth in the wheel boxes ( turned by the rack ) are worn.If nobody has done it before on your car, you can turn the gear wheel through 180 degrees onto an unused part of the wheel.Failing that replacement of the wheel boxes is the answer. If following this route then replace the rubber wedges /mountings as a matter of course.... to stop leaks from rainwater getting into the car.
The drive cable is usually OK unless you are very unlucky.Just a clean up and re-grease works for most.

Thanks Bob - I'll get onto it tomorrow. It's a job I've been putting off for ages.
