Does anyone have suggestions as to a reliable place to get my Traveller MOT in Edinburgh please?

Really looking for somewhere that understands older cars.

There's no 'understanding' required - the test is entirely safety related and the car either complies - or doesn't. I would just say avoid the 'big chains' who are of course out to maximise profits.......

As well as being entirely safety related they do test on visible emissions (smoke!) for classics. Puffs of smoke are ok but they will fail if it is constant.

Most MOT testers correctly refer to the criteria relating to the year of manufacture/first registration, there are a few that have to be reminded (too look). Younger testers do need the experience of pull switch starting, etc. With the arrival of non-compulsory MOT for pre 31/12/1959 cars I think testing stations could potentially loose experience of older mechanically propelled vehicles, which may have some impact on experience on 1960-1972 classics.

My concern was making sure that the tester would be aware of things like the foot operated dip switch and other things that have disappeared in the last 20+ years.

Just leave the car on dip beam, - it's all they are interested in. If really worried - wait in the 'MOT watching area' and you'll be right on hand to advise....

^^^^ as above. Stay with your car for the MOT. It'll save them time trying to find a mechanic who knows where everything is!
