Hi and welcome to the forum. How familiar are you with fitting points? A common problem is fitting the two wires and the plastic washers in the wrong position/order. (Sorry to offend you if you are an expert)
If the coil gets hot then it sounds like you have a permanent earth at the points. Do you get a slight spark at the points when you open them manually?
Where are you, perhaps someone local could help out.

It's NEVER the coil! And the fact it's getting hot means it is passing current - and it's fine!! Edit -as Beero describes above... There must be a short to earth 'downstream' of the coil. Are you SURE it's connected correctly? White wire to coil, and then white/black wire from coil other terminal to dizzy? Take the wire off the dizzy - is there 12 volts there? If so - then the fault to earth is in the dizzy........

Try this:
Key off.
Remove distributor cap.
Put small piece of clean paper between points.
Disconnect wire at distributor that comes from the coil.
Turn key on.
Touch the wire from coil to the distributor terminal.
If you get a spark. it tells us that the problem is probably as Beero said, "A common problem is fitting the two wires and the plastic washers in the wrong position/order."

The important thing with the points is that the 2 wires and their connectors must be touching the spring that goes to the moving contact but must NOT touch the post or the nut and it is the position of the plastic washers that achieve this. Try a search on google as there must be a diagram out there somewhere.
