Rover SD1 gearbox questions

Certainly off topic but all in the same family ;-).Has anyone any knowledge of the construction of the LT77 gearlever on my gearbox(Rover V8 engine)?I want to alter its shape but need to know about the lower, crimped sleeve thingy.I have tested for electrical continuity between the upper rod and the selector and there isnt any.I found one(unconfirmed)mention that the sleeve is rubber filled to form some sort of cushion/shock absorber.Ideally I would like to bend the gearlever at a point about halfway up the sleeve.Any opinions welcome.Pic isnt mine just found on the web.

Indeed the LT77 box - very strong, but a bit of a 'clunker'. (I have two spares for my TR7..) - there are many gear levers for it depending on application and yes - it will be rubber sleeved, so 'heat' will be a no-no... Note - you must never tow a car with this gearbox unless you remove the prop shaft first.. it has a gear driven lub pump which will not rotate when being towed.......

Yes I've cut the gearlever up now, bent the top part and welded it to the (very thick)lower rod.Cheers Roy.

I need that £60 as I've been promised some fancy valve covers Lee!What I actually did was cut off the old gear lever inside the crimped outer sleeve to reveal an inch diameter steel rod(actual gear lever was encased in solid rubber inside the crimped sleeve). Then I removed the SD1 lever and replaced it with the upper end of a moggy gear lever which I welded to the stub.Works a treat and cost nowt.If I don't get the valve covers I'll put the money towards that Daimler 250v8 in the auction!
