Door mirror

Has anyone got an Esm door mirror fitted to their car? The ones that fit through the triangular piece of the quarter light frame. If yes, would they mind measuring the distance from the triangular piece to the centre of the mirror and the mirror diameter please. I would like to get a pair for my van but wondering if they are long enough to see past the van sides!

Jethro's mirrors are 105mm diameter and 80mm from the frame triangle to the mirror centre.
The nearside one needs careful positioning to obtain the best rearward view but the offside is of course much closer to the driver.
I believe you can buy mirrors with long stems but whether these would look good I couldn't say. [frame][/frame]

Les, I fitted them and had to cut the studs to fit, otherwise they protrude into the inner door.
Frankly in my opinion the yorkshire phrase "neither use nor ornament" was invented for these things.
Having fitted them you then need to plug the wings with the originals on too, I didnt bother and now have the Morris/Lambretta look.

I'm considering making some arms from half inch steel bar and finding mirror heads to attach, at least I can control the length that way. I'll probably remove the wing mirrors, much as I like lambrettas!

Les - I've got some long armed Desmo boomerang wing mirrors which would probably see past the van sides.

Have you though of changing the spark plugs Louise, they may be playing up ?

Mirror, wonder if those £2000 mirrors beloved by coaches , etc might be useful. Mount to roof and extend forwards and drop-down. Should be able to see most things to either side. Rear remains a hidden area on a van.

Just fitted a pair of 'ESM' type mirrors to my traveller quarter light panels and am well impressed. I don't quite get a full view of nearside mirror but still well worth it. Much better than wing mounted mirrors for saloons and travellers but doubt they would be of use for a van.
Thread needs cutting shorter and can be fitted by 'flexing' open the triangular panel whilst tightening the nut up.

The traveller is a better shape along the sides John, so a standard mirror seems to do the job. Thanks for taking the time Louise to put up the pics, I'm a bit doubtful about their ability to fit to the quarerlight triangular panel now I've seen the detail, so think it would be a bit of a gamble but again thank you. I've heard that Land rover mirrors have been used successfully, so will explore that possibility next.

Since you need to drill the chrome capping I bought these after market replacements rather than ruin the originals, makes it reversible if you don't like the mirrors.

Fitted long arm van mirrors to the wings of my Traveller, great improvement. Don't forget to fit convex lens mirrors, flat glass mirrors are useless.
When I had a GPO van my solution to the rear view problem was to mount the rear view mirror on the left of the windscreen so that I could see straight back through the left rear window. I don't think that I had a sun visor on that side

I think I may have a spare couple of cappings, which as you mention, would keep the originals. Good idea about the rearview mirror but do need a decent view from off side. I bought some flat mirrors so may regret that move then.

Iv'e spent a fortune trying to get a good rear view in my van, even motorbike mirrors on the triangle door plate. Could't get enough swivel on the near side one to see the side of the van. My final try was ESM's long arm for vanns and bigger mirror heads ,convex, also for vans.

Initially I thought they looked to big but as the view is the best I have had so far, they have grown on me.

I did see a van with car wing mirrors but with those extension pieces fited in Louise'es post.
