I'm looking for a genuine convertible and am very confused by the reproduction ones being passed off for genuine factory built,I've been to look at a 1966 model what should the correct vin number have on it for a genuine one and what should it have for other years, any information would be appreciated

the vin number should start with MAT on a genuine convertible but there are many other ways that you can tell an original one from a converted one e.g. spot welded curved strengtheners each side under the dash, lack of interior light switches in the "A" post to name but a few.

Are the holes present for the switches in a 'gen' Convertible?

Not all genuine convertibles were minus the pillar switches! The spot welds are the best way to check, the B post strengthener was also spot welded.Sill too of course but dash ends and B post are visible.Mind you if you were doing the conversion and had a spot welder you could use it.

From 48-52 there was no code to denote body type
From 52-58 the chassis code was FCA
From 58-69 the chassis code was MAT
Check that the chassis plate has not been changed and that the number on the plate agrees with the number stamped on the engine compartment bulkhead
