Timing vacuum pipe

Post by pingis »

I just came back from a test drive after having replaced the distributor. Big differance. The old one couldn't be adjusted since it was just about totally stuck to the engine block. Sometimes violence is the best way to solve problems :D Before I did the transplant I did some reading and there is a lot written about the vacuum line from the carb to the distributor. No line has been present in the Moggy during the time it has been in my family. I thought now was the time to get one fitted but there is no place on the carb where a vacuum pipe can be fitted :o Does that mean the car isn't fitted with the appropriate carb or do some Minors look like this? It is a 1957 948cc.

I can't be certain but I think your carb should be H version and I don't know if the advance/retard was fitted, others here might clarify this. Here is a HS version and the distributor vacuum connection is in line with the throttle flap.
This is the link for SU carbs. http://sucarb.co.uk/introduction-to-su-carburetters great site for parts.

Best of luck.
Should be ready for tea time.

Thank you SUE482, Hopefully I'll have time to have a look tomorrow. I am going away for vacation so I might have to get back to this mystery in July. What a shiny result you got there. Beautiful!

The location for the vacuum pipe may be in the gasket/spacer between the carb and manifold

ALL Minors with A series engine would originally have the vacuum pipe and the advance/retard on the dizzy. It's an economy device, and also 'brightens' the engine response to the throttle.
