Last evening on returning home brakes failed, fortunately I was approaching a speed hump slowly, cautiously I returned home, about 1/4 mile away pumping pedal to stop. By the time I reached home the breaks were back to normal checked again today and are still working fine???????????????

I would suspect a master cylinder issue, I had an issue many years ago coming in to a roundabout, the brake pedal went to the floor.. fortunately there was no one on the roundabout so I did not need to come to a complete stop.. on the other side of the roundabout, the brakes were fine again but I drove cautiously, all was fine for a mile or two with me checking the brakes all the time to keep my speed down and letting a few cars pass me, until the brake master failed completely again fortunately for me I was still driving slowly and there was not much traffic around and I was able to stop the car on the handbrake... yes there were far to many fortunately in that story for my liking! if it happened to me again I would park up the car and call out the RAC / AA

Has the master cylinder recently been disturbed in any way - or have you been bleeding the brakes, sending the pedal full stroke down the bore. I'm with the others - be glad you got home in one piece - and order a new master cylinder asap.

No and no, however the brake pedal bushes/clutch shaft is showing signs of being past its better days.

Can't see how that would affect it. But maybe a good chance to fix that while fitting a new master cylinder!
