Carburettor float chamber problem

Post by sam.bullen »

Can anyone shed any light on this...?

My fuel pump was not cutting out so I took it apart. Turns out the float had filled with petrol so was not floating. I purchased a replacement float from ESM (one of the 'moulded' types. The issue I have got is when attempting to fit it the location of the moulded bracket is not allowing any movement of the float. I have attached a picture to explain the issue better. Has anyone else ever had this problem and how can it be rectified?

Thanks!

Is it EXACTLY the same as the float you have removed? Most unusual for the plastic floats to leak.....

Nope, the one I took out was the old 'type' where the float is mounted onto a piece of metal which can be bent to adjust the amount of movement before the valve closes. The new float I ordered is one of the plastic ones which, as part of the moulding has a raised piece so there is no adjustment. Trying to attach the picture but it isn't working...[frame]Image[/frame]

Looking at the esm web site that float you have looks different to the one listed, in the float pictured are there two sets of hole for the pivot pin?

Did you have a brass float? And have you replaced it with a plastic one? If it was a brass one they can be repaired by soldering the hole after draining the fuel from it.

I'm pretty sure you can't replace a brass float and 'finger' with the later design plastic float! Fix the brass float..... :)

No I didn't have a brass float - it was soft plastic one but it has filled up with petrol so is not doing its job very well...
I have uploaded a pic of the float in-situ and you can see that with the pin in there is no movement in the valve.[frame]Image[/frame]

Are there packing/sealing washers under the float valve seat? Someone may have put a washer(s) under the valve to adjust the fuel level in the float chamber. Normally there are no washers between the valve seat and the float chamber top.
The valve does seem to be protruding quite a lot from the float chamber top.

No, I thought that there might be packing washers too, so I replaced the valve and can confirm there are no washers underneath it.

Have you replaced the valve pin and not the valve seat?
The pin and the seat need to be a matched pair.
There are two float valves suitable for this float chamber cover SU Pt No: VZX1100 - 0.070" and SU Pt No: WZX1102 - 0.096"
I am pretty sure that the difference in size refers to the flow capacity and not the physical dimensions of the float chamber valve.

Yes, I replaced the float, valve and brass valve seat - all purchased from ESM as they were all suitable for HS2 carb (apparently...)

You still don't say how the new compares to the old ! Put the old one back on - does it fit ok with the new valve?

Nope. Sent it off to the father-in-law to see if he can make any sense of it. It really has puzzled me!
