Are their any auto electrician's our there ? have has a problem for a while - oil light switch not working ? so followed advice kindly given - in the end fitted a gauge and new switch - then pronto the oil light came on "phew" but alas it now stops on - took the speedo head out about four times - checked wiring looking for a possible short - nothing visible -

is it possible it could earth through the bulb holder - head ? think the next thing will be to remove the bulb ? on the plus sign the oil gauge is a fantastic addition !

I see no one has come to help so here's advice. Ignition on.
If you remove the wire from the oil switch the light should go off, if it doesnt then an earth fault.
If you connect the wire you took off to earth the light should come on.
If this tests ok then its the oil switch or no oil pressure.

Thanks Very Much - l realize electric s are not everyone's cup of tea !

originally l had no oil light on - so tried taking the wire off the switch to earth - no result - so removed speedo head and replaced oil light bulb - this then illuminated - but all the time so after advice on the site l fitted a oil pressure gauge and a new switch !

Oil pressure very good - rides at around 60-70 tick over 35/40 ish but warning light still on - traced wiring as far as my little knowledge allows - but can see nothing obvious -- have again removed speedo head today tried a new bulb !

Am resigned to dropping into a auto electricians when next in town - prob something quite daft -

Many thanks for your intervention - advice much appreciated

Ok that solves a couple of questions, if you remove the wire from the oil switch does your light go off.

When you first switch on the Ign - what lights do you see in the speedo? Then - when you start the engine and rev up - what lights now?

When ignition on oil light and ign light both come on - when engine starts up ign light goes out as it should but oil light stayed on ! when wire taken off oil light switch - oil light still on - bulb being removed cures it ha ha all panel light seem to were they should be ie illumination lights and main beam light ! so at a dead end at moment ?

Have removed bulb as a temp measure - until can have it checked - was annoying me - :o

Thanks for all suggestions

If the oil light stays on when you remove the wire from the oil switch then there is an earth fault on that cable to the oil light. You need to locate this as the next step.

OR -the Ign and Oil lights have been mixed up - and it's actually the IGN light that is staying on - suggesting no battery charge. To test - switch on and pull the lead off the oil switch - does the IGN light go out??

Roy see Dave's previous reply, the oil light stays on when you remove the wire from the oil switch. This as I said indicates an earth fault, or, as you pointed out, have the oil and the ignition light conections been mixed up.
Dave just check the colours should be as follows otherwise an earth fault.
Oil: Gn & Gn/Y
Ign: W & Y

Or - it's the 'filter blocked' light.....which would NOT be on until the engine is started....

Thanks again for your suggestions - have checked ignition light - that s ok have checked the wiring to oil light warning light and that seem's to be correct colours - it s am thinking now along the lines of bad earth - but cant seem to find it - ! unless
it s somehow earthing through the speedo head - bulb holder ?

appreciate all advice - but am in Nottingham next Wednesday so will pop into auto electrical company - see wha\t they can find - lucky it s such a easy job to get behind the clock hey ? mind you l think l can now do it blind folded :D

Thanks again for your help Dave

The 'oil' and 'ign' lights should be in insulated bulb holders - each with two wires attached.. Has someone used a non-insulated holder perhaps?

Well its definitly an earth fault, either the bulb holder or the wire from the oils switch. Now which one :-?
Take the bulb out and using a resistance meter measure between the Gn/Y wire on the bulb holder free from the speedo, to earth, if that shows low reading (0- 2 ohms) then the fault is on that wire. If not its on the bulb holder.
Simples :D
