indicator flashes

Post by Offshore »

As part of my struggle to get my 1970 traveller started recently I changed the battery for a new one. Tyres were 18 years old so I figured the battery may not be helping things.

Not driven the car till this Sunday 1st June for nearly 3 months. She is now back in her rightful place - the office car park.

It may be my imagination but the indicators seem to flash on and off a lot more than they did. All four units are working brightly.

They flash on and off now at 90 times a minute. Is this normal or is something packing up? New battery from memory is 43 amp.

The official permitted range of the indicator flashing for the MOT is between 60 and 120 flashes per minute.

Probably with your new battery the volts are higher - so yes - faster flashing!

Thanks for the answers guys. The flashing on the old battery was a nice and steady rate comparable to the wife's Nissan. I'll just have to get used to indicators on steroids.

No MOTs where I live so not an issue but appreciate the permitted range info.

Make sure the bulbs are all 21 watt.

Interestingly this morning on the way to work it was dark and raining so had lights and wipers on. Indicators flashed at normal speed and went quicker when wipers off.

I think all the bulbs are 21 watt as they have all been replaced in the last few months as 2 had failed and I got pulled over and gently told off.

I have been advised to change to 18 watt bulbs as this will slow the flash rate. Not quite sure I understand that logic.

That would INCREASE the flash rate. It's possible your charging system is running too high a voltage. Would be interesting to check the battery volts with engine at decent revs - and then again with headlights on.
