Steering wheel refurb

My steering wheel - 1966 later type is looking quite tatty, seems to have grey flecks where hands naturally rest, so presume a coating is worn off here.
I did have a bash and see if T cut would improve it, just in case said grey flecks were over spray or something, made no real difference.
Are there any good tips for smartening up a steering wheel, I was wondering about some epoxy paint, done properly that could be hard wearing, that or look for a better wheel but as they are all well used by now seems a refurb is required.
