I'm in the process of replacing the boxing plate on the nearside of my traveller (sill step & B post to remain, floor extension and outer sill being replaced). The boxing plate and sill step appear to have been replaced once before, the boxing plate having been cut and welded to the front of the B post instead of continuing behind it. I'm leaving the wood on for now to help keep the shape and as many reference points as possible, so I can't see the boxing plate extension. There is, however, a flat plate at the back of the B post. Is this normal, or is it likely to be the remains of the original boxing plate? The foot of the B post has been replaced at some point, probably when the sill step and boxing plate were replaced.
Lindsay Porter's book, from the renowned Haynes organisation, gives the following advice
...part of the B post structure is hidden by the timber. All you can do, without removing the woodwork, is to let in and weld in pieces as far as you can see and reach, after removing as much corroded metal as possible. This area can then be repaired properly later on when the woodwork is replaced.
Is this really the best course of action, or should I bite the bullet and get the wood off now?
