Camshaft advice for 1275 engine

My car has a midget 1275 engine with a hot cam(probably Piper if the sticker on the rocker cover can be believed but I'm unsure).This is what was fitted when I bought the car as an unfinished project.To be frank I don't like it.I aren't a boy racer(very far from it)and although it goes like hell when its "on cam" I would prefer something more sedate and a bit quieter.Can someone please advise what cam to buy to make it as "standard" as possible.I might even explore the logistics of swapping this setup for a 1098 engine.Its wasted on me.

Personally for the requirement you desire I would put a standard 1275cc MG Midget camshaft back into the engine and sell the cam currently fitted
If you go for a 1098cc engine try and find one with 2" mains. Much more durable.

If I was purchasing a 1275cc Midget camshaft I would rather go for a good S/H one rather than a re-profiled one as you never know what profile the re-profiling has been done too unless you know the company that did the re-profiling.
Standard cams for the 1275cc Midget and which to look out for are:-
AEG 577
AEG 323
AEG 538
Also fitted to the Marina 1.3
All with 1/2" wide lobes.

You will be very disappointed with a 'standard' cam after running what I assume is a 544/286 profile cam. If possible - find an MG Metro cam which was developed for the 1275 engine - up to 6000 rpm. Not many about these days - a near equivalent is a 256 camshaft which will run nicely. I too would not buy that 'reprofiled' camshaft...who knows what it is!

I would either go for a standard cam, or something like the Piper HR255 cam which gives more gains in the low-mid revs range

That cam runs very high lift with 'soft' timing. Note they also advise 'high lift' rockers to be used with it
.....these are not included and are extremely expensive.... They also forget to mention that a duplex chain will be required, although your engine should have that already if it has a hard cam at the moment. If you are willing to spend that amount of hard-earned......good luck with it! It would not be my choice......

Problem is - it may be exactly what you have, or very similar to what's in your engine at the moment. Keep looking for an MG cam - or a 255/6 at the right price. It is almost certainly an engine out job to change the cam..... Only hope is if you pull out your cam and it is a peg drive - then you could refit another cam with the same drive arrangement. Cam followers held up with 8 magnet sticks of course..
