As I am clearly thick and have stared at my wiper motor for at least a few minutes - after giving up on finding a solution to my handbrake, which seems to think it's insanely funny to shoot the white button off when it's on - can anyone give me a link to a clear diagram about taking the wiper motor to pieces so I can check the grease, which is probably solid and the brushes please?

Unscrew the lid, lift off and all will be revealed.

Disconnect the battery first !

Because the wiper unlike most other electrical stuff is wired in " live ".i.e. it only works when the switch makes the circuit connecting to earth..disconnect the battery before starting.label the wires carefully for later re-assembly.

Mark the metal "dome / cover " and the flat casing, by scratching the metal.The relative position is crucial to reset the self parking operation.As soon as you release the 4 screws on the cover the dome / cover is free to move around.
You will only be able to deal with the grease in the motor if you partially dismantle in situ.The grease in the rack under the dashboard will remain untouched.
Be very, very , careful with the delicate self parking mechanism and also the electrical brush holder.The springs are very tiny and the material prone to breaking.You can get replacement brushes on their own if the carbon is too worn down.

Hopefully you have the wiper motor done by now, easy to strip, clean and re grease.

My handbrake button did that, it's threaded onto the rod that goes down the middle of the lever.

The thread I think had become worn on mine, get some araldite and coax some into the button, and then refit it, a screwdriver by the ratchet will keep the rod out while you screw it back on.

Leave it to go off and it will be fine, and you'll be able to unscrew it should you need to.

for Series five cars ie from car number 990290 onwards the handbrake knob is a press fit and no longer threaded, glue seems to be the answer

Earlier ones can be identified by a split cotter pin on the pawl pivot...later ones were riveted so as not to be repairable any more....unless you drill the pivot out and fit a clevis pin
