Morris Minor Owners Club

Hello everyone,

I am new to this club although my Moggy came with a MMOC sticker inside.
I bought a Minor that needed some serious love and thought I would work on it slowly improving it, after taking a few parts away decided that it deserver a full restoration because it is not that bad. I thought, this is the right time to save it before it gets worse.
I don't know if anyone is interested but I can post pics of all I am doing and share the probs I have encountered, and if anyone has tips or advice I will surely appreciate them.

I would also like to find out if my car was registered here previously, is it possible?

I don't have an engine crane so removed engine and box through the front by hand lifting (regret it today, my back kills me) and after separating them I used a 10 quid injected plastic skateboard to remove the engine and the gearbox came out by hand.

From what you've shown, the car doesn't look too bad rust-wise. What did you use to strip the paint?

All the packed stuff is kept dry and covered in the shed until it is time to attend to it and put it back on!

There are big spots of rust and a few holes on the rear wheel arches. I'll make a post with all the rust I found so far on Saturday. But for now, here is an idea:



This is where the spot, on both sides, where rust is really bad. There are a couple more holes but I'm happy that 80% is surface rust and is coming out quite easy.

Regarding the paint strip, I'm doing it by hand with sand paper and poly strip discs. Hardwork and time consuming, but I don't like chemicals and media blasting would involve a great cost.

You're doing great and obviously intending to save money by doing as much as you can yourself. By not using chemicals to strip the paint hopefully there will less chance of a reaction when you come to respray her, though others on here will be able to offer more detailed 'sage' advice on paint prep / spraying.
In a way it's great to see those old crossplies on her, though I dare say you'll swap over to radials. As an aside I run my radials tubeless on original steel wheels and have done since 2007, so it can be done.
Why not treat yourself to a set of stainless hubcaps. They polish up just as good as the chrome and you won't have to be constantly dealing with the rusty areas. (Link below for you if interested.)

I will be using the original rims, i am refurbishing them completely and getting some white walls in!
I really do all of it myself; mechanics, engine, body, paint and upholstery.
That's why i love all of my cars so much, many times i have bought a car to restore and sell but i love the work on them so much that i kept all of them! Haha
I'm loving this car more and more everyday and all parts sites are useful.

Does anyone know a place in London where i can do a head conversion for unleaded?

A bit more paint is off the car and no more rust found so far.[frame][/frame]

So far the problematic rust areas are:

-the rear wings mounting points,
-a small hole on the left hand side of the engine bay floor,
-the corners by the rear bumper mounting struts,
-the passenger door hinge panel,
-the outside corners by the floor of pilars A and C,
-and a big cut in the LHF wing.

The rest is surface rust! Hence the full strip down, i want to make sure
It will never become more than surface rust.

Hopefully I'll be able to fix it all without having to buy panels.
I already know I will have to buy new rear wings so I need to keep the costs down.

It will take new rubbers all around and a new set of carpets, seat covers, headlining and doorcards.
