So, I have five gears. Reverse is push down, and to the left, up.

Next to first, like.

Any ideas where my gearbox might be from - or how to find out? Previous owner knew little/nothing...

Look for stamp MOWOG, FORMOCO etc. Most common 5 speed box is Ford Type 9

The other common five speed conversion to be fitted to the Minor was the 5 speed Toyota box which had an alloy casing. The main casing of the Ford type 9 box is cast iron so is easily distinguishable from the Toyota gearbox. So if the main casing is cast iron it is most likely to be Ford.

As an aside some of the early Ford gearbox conversions were 4 speed. I drove one of the early 4 speed conversions and found it a much better gear box than the Minor and subsequently went onto fit a Ford 4 speed box to my Minor.
