Replacement Mirror for under £1 !!

Post by taupe »

Hi

My traveller has the early rear view mirror which is just a plain glass mirror sheet and has a metal mounting clip.

I have been looking for a second hand replacement or NOS mirror glass for a while now as the edges of mine have 'vaporised' !

I haven't had much success in my search so...

I saw 3mm Plexiglass mirror sheet on ebay at £3.95 per A4 sheet including postage and enough for 5 mirrors....

A 10 minute job to make a new one...here are some pics.....
1 Mark around the old mirror

2 See the missing reflector!

3 Cut out with a fine tooth saw..I used a tenon saw

4 Sand the edges with coarse

5 Then fine and round the edges with a file.. when finished polishing remove the protective film...

6 Betty the cat checking it out

7 Rear view with the clip fitted

8 Ditto.. quite a nice texture but you could spray with black wrinkle finish...

Thought you might enjoy!!

Hi taupe,
Excellent Idea, I'm now watching some Plexiglass myself on eBay.
How's your Traveller restoration getting on?
I've added a link to some crinkle finish paint below, for anyone who might be interested.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Hi Mike

Traveller is progressing steadily.. I havent had time to update the thread.. all the floors/sills are done, just the rear end to tidy up and an awkward panel above the steering rack then painting prep can commence on the shell.

Have been trial fitting the bolt on front panels, valance, grille, wings etc and adjusting... nearly there on that bit but getting wings and all gaps just right is taking time, there always has to be compromise somewhere on the fit but its difficult to decide when its as good as its going to get.....

Ive rescued a local traveller (almond green) which was completely stripped to the shell (very little rust or previous repair!) and this is the next project once I have the Rose Taupe one on the road!!

Glad to hear things are still progressing towards completion. Hope you have time to update the thread at some point, it would be interesting to see the progress you've made.
And a shot of your next project.
Best wishes,
Mike.
