I have ordered a new petrol line as the line fitted has been cut at the pump end when a new pump was fitted. The line was cut to remove the olive as this was not required as the pump had a push-fit connection. This pump is now u/s and I have went back to the original-type pump. It has been proposed that the last couple of inches of the new line is cut at the pump end to utilise the nut/olive to save time and effort running the new line. The two ends of line would be connected by a short length of petrol grade hose. Would this be acceptable? How difficult is it to run the line from the tank to the pump and what are the chances of problems with the removal of the old line at the tank end? Thank you.

Running a new line is not too bad, just thread it through where the original one ran. I'm sure people have joined these pipes in all manner of ways but with petrol it's safer in one piece. You may have to use grips on the tank end but as it is being discarded will not matter, use some wd40 to help, if it's stuck.

As above -but I would worry there must be a fair risk that it could all go horribly wrong when you try to unscrew the old pipe from the tank....... And it's also not going to be 'easy' to thread the new pipe through the gearbox support. I would be very tempted to do as you propose - and store the new pipe away for any future use. But do use a proper flexi petrol pipe and good clips....

Wire brush the securing nit at the tank end and soak with proper releasing fluid. Make sure that you can undo the nut. Assuming yes, then it's a very simple job to fit the new. It is quite flexible and threads easily along the correct route. It is held in place with simple clips that just unbend and then close up again. Much better to fit the whole pipe than try joining, particularly as you've already ordered it!

I have mine connected with a piece of rubber hose like you say and haven't had any problems; just make sure to use high quality hose, good clamps and have everything nice and clean.

I can see both sides of the "to join or not to join" argument and my only comment would be that if you are using some suitable hose to join two halves of the pipe together, make sure its away from the heat of the exhaust manifold. Firstly in case it does leak near the hot surface and secondly to avoid the heat "ageing" the hose and making it brittle. I fitted a replacement pipe many years ago and like others have said, couldn't get the tank end free. I cut the old pipe about 2 or 3 inches away from the tank and put my join there so the vast length of the pipe run was using the new pipe. It went through MOT's with no problems.
