Re-spray panels on / off ??

Good evening my learned friends. I have a question; wings, doors, bonnet and boot lid off, all stripped and etch primed. Body stripped etch primed and first coat of primer/filler. Should one carry on spraying each panel off the car OR wings on, boot lid and bonnet on and then go for it. I guess I am just wondering about the wing "gaskets", does it work better to re-fit the wings before starting the final cellulose coats ??

Also, does anyone have experience of welding in a new Boot Aperture Repair Panel ? Just got mine from CWares and wonder whether I should cut off the lateral wings on the new panel and then just butt weld to the rear of the rear inner arches and then along the cut seams ? a steer would be nice.

Thankfully heading towards final re-build. It's taken 2 years and I have enjoyed it but looking forward to getting the spraying done.

You would need to keep the rear wings off - if you want the bead to be a contrasting colour. Good luck fitting them without chipping the new paint! Should pre-fit them first, do all the push/pull curse etc till they fit - and then remove for spraying. I would have everything else ON - to save the risk of paint damage when fitting. But I'm sure much more experienced and skillful people than me will be along in a minute to tell you what you should really do!

i have rebuilt two minors and prefer to paint the bonnet off the car because it is difficult to keep the gun at a uniform distance between wings and bonnet due to its shape. i would paint all wings and doors off the car and paint all edges first.this applies to solid colours,if its a metalic paint this method would lead to poor panel matching so i would paint all panels in situ, hope this helps, graham

I would refit the doors before final painting but leave the rest off. The doors are big heavy panels to try and refit with nice shiney new paint on.

It depends entirly on what facilities you have,big enough compressor and tank ,to hold pressure for long enough,garage big enough to get round the car easily,facility to have a dry heating system.etc.If you have the above it then comes down to how much skill you have.
If you want the rear wing strip to be as original(Unpainted) then as BMC says rear wings off.If you only have a small air system then it will be very difficult to do a whole car in one pass,you will run out of air,then you are faced with overspray spoiling the previously painted section.
If you take the panels off its about certain that you will damage the paint when refitting.ie,four door rears are a pain to fit,the bonnet 's not bad with assisance.
If all the panels are now off,spray round the inside door frames,boot frame and engine compartment,refit(Except rear wings) the panels,and do the car as one.
If only a small system or limited space,do a panel at a time(Buy loads of quality masking tape)Its a long process because you need to leave a painted panel a fair while to harden before you can mask that one,to do the adjacent one.
The worst bit is the roof because its not just the roof its the front window frame,scuttle,down the rear across the top of the boot and down to the rear boot panel.Theres no natural break to where you can stop,it has to be done as one panel.allthough I once did one and stopped at the body line at waist level,then hid the paint joint with the red coach line. Good luck with it.

Thanks all for the advice. Think I'm going to do the boot edge, up and over including the door frames, down to the boot slam panel, working one side to the other. I think the wings, doors, bonnet, boot lid and front grill will all have to be done separately. Just pushed for space but have a 100l compressor. I guess the re-fit will just have to be slow to avoid dings. Anyway, moving onto a second coat of filler primer and then comes the black stuff (top coat). Wish me luck, think I'm going to need it !!!

For info,.you may know this already,put a light dust coat of black over the final primer,then flat this off,it shows up the highs and low spots,which need more attention(USE DRY NO WATER) primer absorbs water and takes a long time to dry out.
