Can the choke cable (cable only) be replaced?

Post by katy »

Was wondering if only the cable part of the choke cable assembly can be replaced. The multi strand cable is rusted and frayed. would like to replace it with a solid wire if possible, or a standed cable if need be. Has any one done this? If so how is it removed and then replaced from the knob and extension part? It looks like it's originally been factory crimped.
Prefer to install a solid wire as it's no fun trying to get all the little strands into the wee hole on the carburetor choke arm fitting.

Turn the multi strand wire tight and solder the last 1". Works every time for me. If too much solder to pass through the securing clip run a fine file over the out side of the inner cable, also trimming the end is easy when soldered :D

Now I wonder who is selling that..... I can't imagine how you would get a new cable on the original knob....perhaps cut it off near the knob intertwine the wires and solder on a bicycle brake cable? Sounds like a load of trouble......bid what you think Dennis' cable is worth and keep your fingers crossed.....

Speedy Cables and possibly others will replace the cable on your original knob

I have changed two cables into the original handle successfully with the aid of a vice and some pliers. I replaced the old braided wire with a solid wire as suggested.

I found it was possible to decrimp the original with some pliers, providing a whole to fit the new cable.. Once removed the whole can be opened up and a new wire inserting for either re-crimping or soldering- I chose the former

it has been working well for 5 years, although I suspect you can only do this one or twice before the handle will no longer support a further cable swap

I removed the cable as per the above, then drilled a hole around 3/8" up, inserted a new section of cable and used a self tapping screw, then ground the end off until it was perfectly round.
May be able to use a grub screw in a similar fashion...
