Please dont shoot me if this is a very stupid question but should a standard 1098 starter motor fit in my 1340 engine from a midget?

please don't shoot me if I don't give a straight answer....
if you have the 1098 backplate and the original or 1274 midget box then I think it uses the normal starter.
If you have a non-standard backplate, Ford flywheel and clutch and a Ford box then I would guess you want a Ford starter too.. Cam would know more on that one I hope

Well.......... the starter will work whichever flywheel you have. All A-series flywheels have compatible ring gear so it's just the position away from the flywheel which is determined by the engine backplate and the starter flange.

I know Mini ones don't fit but I would say Minor ones SHOULD fit a Midget engine although I have not tried it myself. Kevin should know better as he has a 1275 Midget engine in his Moggy.......

After my Minor's starter lost a few teeth I swiped the one from my (1275) Sprite and it worked just fine. In fact I think it's still on the Minor and the replacement went back in the Sprite...
