What engine oil should I use

This might seem a silly question and I've been changing oil in cars for about 50 years, but its all changed now with all the fancy oils around. My engine seems to rattle after I put some everyday multi grade oil in that I'd bought from Wilkinson's.Ii just wondered what oil club members are using in their Minors these days.

You need to use 20/50 oil rather than a multi grade. As for which brand, there have been numerous discussions about that here and preferences vary from premium brands to the cheapest 20/50 you can find, or something in between!

I use Comma 20/50 engine oil in all my vehicles , trade price is approx. £12.00 per 4.5ltr.
It meets all the specs I require.

I run anything from small 4 cylinder engines to large V8`s.

After 30 years I have had no problem.

Years ago you were either a Castrol,Duckhams,Shell or Mobil devotee, I am sure all these oils had the same spec, just brand names.

Yes I've seen Coma on ebay and wondered about using it it. I think very often one is paying for the name, but have no way of proving it. I read somewhere on the internet that all the additives in all the oils in the world are made by just two companies.

Thanks for this, it's looking like 20/50 is the best option, although it's been pointed out that this is in fact multigrade. I think the main point is that the additives in many modern oils may be harmful to classic cars and I should choose a 20/50 which is formulated for older or classic cars.

The Wilko and Morrisons 20W50 is perfectly satisfactory oil for an A series - and not too expensive.

Thanks! I'll have a look next time I am dragged along to look miserably at cans of paint....... Does the oil have any quality markings on the bottle?

Hi
Just fetched some oil as mentioned by Richard.
Carlube Daytona API SEC/CC.20/50.
Don't forget its wrinkly discount day today, makes it £9.88. :D
