Hi there,

I'm just prepairing Wolseley 9'' brakes for my Traveller and fitted TR7 shoes and Morris calipers to a Wolseley backplate.
But now I realized that Wolseley springs don't fit that combination without drilling extra holes to the shoes.

There are a lot of useful hints on this board to adapt TR7 shoes and Morris calipers to a Wolseley backplate and there has been a discussion of using 8'' springs on Wolseley shoes in 9'' drums.

I bet that there is someone who used TR7 shoes in Wolseley drums.
What size of springs did you use? Did you use the standard holes or drilled extra holes?

Achim - I have just spent 2 full days struggling to get a good balance with my Wolseley 9" drums after overhauling the cylinders...... And I did look out my spare set of TR7 shoes as that would have been tomorrow's job - if I hadn't finally got a good balance late this afternoon..... The TR7 shoes I looked out are a bit too wide - so my first job would have been to run the angle grinder over the sides to take off about 2mm each side.....There is plenty of 'meat' on them to do this.... However I believe the other set I have (and can't quite find at the moment) ....are not so wide. So - check the width of the shoes in the drums - against the 'wear pattern'on the drum - and narrow them down if necessary. I compared the TR7 shoe hole pattern with the W shoes -and they are very similar - so if you have the W springs - just use them. My 'other' set of W brakes uses springs from the 8" brakes - and I drilled some holes in the shoes so they would fit without being stupidly over stretched. So it's a matter of judgement for you! Have you fitted the Minor wheel cylinders (not calipers) ok ? Any questions - just ask. Roy

I knew it was only a matter of time for you to post an answer.

To fit the Morris cylinders and TR7 shoes to the Wolseley backplate I had to drill one extra hole to the backplate for each cylinder and to grind a small slot to each shoe for the adjusters.

As I have got Wolseley springs I will try to use these even if they are very tight.

Well done so far! If anything - the springs may be a little bit 'slack' - but once the adjuster is fitted they will be tight enough I think. Be sure to fit the short end of the spring at the piston end of each cylinder - the longer section at the blind end of each cylinder. If you need pics - I can take some tomorrow...if the bl**dy rain stays away.....

That is what it looks like so far. The Wolseley 9'' springs are very slack and I might give it a try with Morris 8'' springs or even Midgte 7'' springs using different holes. The shoes are still a little wide and will have to see the grinder.[frame][/frame]

That's no use - you need to use the further out round hole - not the rectangular slot for that spring. See WIN's similar thread earlier today!

When I compared W and TR shoes yesterday - these outer holes almost exactly match. But if you feel it's too tight - just drill holes where you think is right.

just moved the springs to the other holes. That's fine. Thank you for pointing me that way.

When I put the drum over the shoes and cylinders next to the backplate it looks like the shoes are to wide (44 mm) and the drums don't close properly over the backplate.

You suggested to use a grinder to make them suitable. Wolseley shoes are only 38 mm wide. To cut 3 mm from side seems to be quite a lot as the rivets sit quiet far to the outside.

Yes these shoes do look v wide -try just 2mm each side at first -should be enough - and seems to work for WIN ok. The first set of TR shoes I had were slightly narrower - but I had to use a couple of them on my TR7.... The second set I bought are indeed wider - 1.75" . W shoes are 1.5" - but i'm sure there is room for a bit wider... Check if there is an unworn section on the edge of the brake drum - may need to be buffed down (or skimmed if you have a lathe..) level with the 'worn' section of the drum to allow the drum to slide over the shoes.

I wouldn't use the angle grinder on the brake shoes.
What might be better would be to use MG TD 9" brake shoes which are 38mm wide. I will post up a photo of the Wolseley 1500 and the MG TD brake shoes side by side. They appear to be identical even down to the hole pattern.

But where to get them..and at what price? W1500 shoes are available - I found two sets on ebay - but v expensive ! I spotted various other inexpensive 9" shoes on ebay - and have asked the sellers for width details where not specified.

Here's the photo. MG TD brake shoes v Wolseley. When placed on top of each other they are identical. The only difference is the extra hole. They are both 38mm width.

Brown and Gammons or Moss is another alternative.

Price £32.50 for four shoes on ebay.
At that price I wouldn't go to the trouble of modifying TR7 shoes.

The 'extra hole' isn't used......probably the very same brakes Declan?? And I agree - that price isn't too bad - and a LOT less than is being asked for W shoes. The TR7 suggestion was made when someone couldn't find W shoes anywhere - and I had just bought 2 sets of TR7 @ ~ £10 per set delivered! It was never suggested to be a direct fit - just an 'economy' method of getting a decent set of shoes...mine are nos Lockheed, with good looking friction material. And I will be using them. WIN seems to have used them ok - it just needs a little perseverance!

Modified and fitted my TR7 shoes to the Wolseley 9" front drums this afternoon - not difficult, and working very well!

Declan - that ebay advert says the shoes are for Front AND Rear on the TD....so it has 9" rear brakes?? Could be interesting for a Minor......

Yes the TD uses the same 9" brake shoes both front and rear.
