Sill kick / cover plates

Post by biomed32uk »

I am just wondering how the cover plates should be fixed at the top, they are sandwiched between parts at the bottoms but have no fixings at the top, and are tending to spring upwards, the bottom corner of the drivers door has been rubbing on it when closing.

I did think of popping them off, and putting more of a bend in the bottom so they tend to want to spring downwards and not upwards.

I think there are supposed to be some self tapping screws at the top, but not sure whether inside or out and where, and what they screw in to.

Anyone have a picture or some advice please. Many thanks, another job on Maisie to get her into shape.

Yes - tap them down and then a couple of self tappers.

Where do the screws actually go, I have seen them on other cars but have not paid too much attention. I am presuming on my car there will be no holes for them to go into as that's all new metal.

I can understand why they have been left off but the plates do need securing down at the top. Some nice stainless steel self tappers called for I think.

I shall probably leave it until I haul those plates off anyway, as I want to pump the car full of Dinitrol, so that would be a good time to do the job once.

Brilliant thanks for that, now I know what to achieve. I shall wait until the dinitrol session, see if there are any existing holes and if so drill the cover to suit, if not I can sort my own.

Well, took a back pedal on that plan, having major trouble getting the drivers door to stay shut, and concluded that the plate sitting proud and up was not helping matters.

Whizzed it off, three self tappers and now I have a drivers door that stays shut and not springing onto the safety all the time :D

Door handles a bit worn as the handle flops around, I reckon a new pin and possibly turn a bush up for the handle if that's worn and we should be improving that, got some phosphor bronze bar kicking around in the workshop if needed.

Got to come off again to do the rust proofing, good news is that its perfect in there, not a trace of it, double smile :D :D

Passenger side needs doing but that's working OK at the moment, there's an old seal on there that's more compliant, had to fit new lower seals to the drivers door which was compounding the problem I am sure.

Thanks for the help on this one.

I'm about to fit the sill covers on my car - is it really only 3 self tappers on each one?
