The spare cylinder head I am working on has now been completely stripped ,at least 4 valves had to be driven out still seized to the valve guides but all the guide holes in the head seem fine,I managed to get out the remains of the bypass stub and again the thread in the head is fine,2 spark plugs were also very tight but eventually came out again the threads are fine, but my question is please I have clocked the cylinder head face with a DTI clock on a ground face plate and over the total length of the head there is .002 of an inch variation is this OK or does it need a regrind .I intend to get a local engineering company to just reface the valve sealing faces after I have fitted new guides

Well done ! I doubt it was as good as 2 thou when it was new........ 4 valves seized in guide??? I thought the head I bought was bad when one valve was 'a bit tight' in a guide - but then it did have a blocked up bypass hose.... What head is it ? A 202 ??

Thanks for the reply it is a 2A629 the same item that was available local to me for £4 a couple of the valves were seized in the down position and was fairly rusty in the port area it seemed to have had a hard life in some areas at first glance but has cleaned up really well, the reason I was questioning the flatness was because the well established engineering company I will use thought .001 inch was about what was acceptable but I thought an A series from the 50s was as you say slightly more than this

Ahhh -so you bought THAT head! I understand now.... 2 thou will be fine - if you are having it skimmed - ask if it will be any more expensive to take a decent cut off it - say 30 tho - which would raise the Comp ratio nicely and (slightly) help performance and economy.
