Did you put a lead in slope on the leading edge of the brake shoe? It helps alleviates squeal and helps bed in the brake shoes.
Always buy branded brake shoes and the best you can afford because that is all you have to stop with. All safety critical brake parts should be of good quality and meet the appropriate standard i.e. BSI, ISO etc.

Trubble is - it's not easy to find 'branded' shoes for the old 7" brakes..... There was a thread on this recently. As Phil says - a chamfer may help, and you should 'run them in' steadily increasing the use till eventually you use them enough to get them a bit smelly! Probably worthwhile then taking the drums off and cleaning out the dust - and checking to see if the shoes are wearing reasonably evenly.

For 7" brake shoes try
http://holden.co.uk
Look in Morris - hardware - brakes & suspension - brakes and they are listed.
They list 7" Minor brake shoes by Mintex. Pt No: 065 740 or 065 744. In stock and made in UK as well.
