Another speedo problem.

Morning all!
We have a 1970 Traveller, the speedometer itself is working fine but, the mileometer seems to have jammed. It was rolling over to exactly 85000 miles and then stopped.
Just wondered if there was an easy "quick fix" for this, or am I looking at changing the whole speedo head?
Thanks in advance,
Dave.

What can be said with confidence is that it is not an electrical problem - the drive is purely mechanical. As you get higher mileage, so more digits need to move at once - and the ones on the left are not used to moving, and so get sticky. I have seen this happen a few times, and often it will cure itself after a good blast down a motorwayt. If not, then you could try sripping it down, but I suggest just swapping the unit. If you want to get it serviced, then the specialist companies will be able to keep the correct recorded miles for you, adding a few on for whatever you have done whilst it hasn't been counted.

A few drops of thin oil will fix the problem once you can get into the speedo to access the mileometer!
I've done a few by taking the chrome bezel off the front and then the glass etc. I've got access to very small bore syringes which I put some 3 in 1 oil in (or similar) and put a very drop down between each digit wheel of the mileometer. The smallest amount of oil will go a very long way to lubricate a mechanism of this type. WHile the glass is out you can clean the inside face of it - its surprising how dirty it gets!
I will say this is quite a delicate job, so if you're not feeling confident about it then best to send it away and have it done professionally.

without stripping down try a can of air duster or a compressed air line in the back to blow any dust out and perhaps dislodge the offending piece jamming it
