hello all
I am slowly working my way through restoring my 68 traveller
I came to take the passenger door off this WE and discovered that top and bottom only has one good bolt holding door to A frame. The top moving plate has 3 sheared off studs in and only one good hole. studs are so short i cannot get hold to remove. Any ideas on how to get t round this , do i have to remove the wing and remove and re tap the plate ( or get a new one) and refit the wing , or is there a work around ...

Can you drill a hole through the centre of the stud and use an extractor.

You probably already know this, but it's not just the wing, you will have to cut away part of the hinge cover plate and weld back in.

you may get it with an extractor,BUT if they are solid and the extractor snaps,all too frequent with poor quality tools these days,then re -drilling is virtually impossible,because the broken bit of extractor is too hard and the drill bit skids off it. Probably better to completely drill out the old stud and re tap. Or if you can weld,cut a hole above the hinge in the A pillar and gain access to the plate,remove it,then with heat you should be able to extract the broken studs,refit and reweld the hole.I have had one of mine,held with two studs,two broken for the last 10 years,don't know I would be happy with only one holding though.If you do decide to drill out,make sure you have held the plate with one of the good studs,because if you rip the plate off the holding tabs inside the pillar,then you WILL be cutting and rewelding to refit the plate. The best and quickest way to remove door hinge studs is to weld a big snot of mig weld onto the remains of the stud. Do not weld stud to A pillar!

The heat will loosen the rusted threads and by grabbing the weld snot with a mole grip or Irwin Bolt grippers you will be able to undo the stud.

But before you remove the last stud, secure the plate by drilling a small hole through A pillar and into thread plate and hold in place with a self tapping screw!

Yes - go with the welding idea as #1 choice - then the drilling out and avoid the extractor idea....they are the spawn of the devil....
