Right Chaps
I am a complete novice at this and I need some advice.
I have taken off my radiator to get it re-cored and wondered if it was a good idea to flush the system with a hose from the thermostat exiting the bottom hose. Does this make sense?
If it's a stupid question then I apologise already

You would need to remove the thermostat to get any water flow.......but once that is out, it's a good idea.

If you are " complete novice " ( the place where everybody starts !! ) at this, then take care with removing the three nuts
retaining the Thermostat housing.
They are often corroded/rusty /cruddy etc. and prone to shearing/ breaking the studs.Wire brush the worst of it off, then put penetrating oil on the nuts / stems and leave them for a while before grabbing your spanner or socket.
Work the spanner / socket back and forth a little at a time and re oil if they are stiff.
Have a new gasket at the ready, they are not much money.Wire brush the studs clean , an old rag stuffed in the hole so that the engine block stays clean.Coat the studs with Coppaslip, thermostat back in, gasket on, housing on and tighten the nuts.
Next time you remove the housing to replace the thermostat for instance , it will be easy.
If the housing is stuck after the nuts are removed do NOT be tempted to hit it with a hammer. The casting will break.Pour some more penetrating oil down the stems , after wire brushing again and leave for a while.Use a rubber mallet or an ordinary hammer and a small block of wood to soften the blows.Work your way around the base of the housing until it is free.Don't be tempted to use an old chisel /screwdriver to lever the housing up.You will damage the casting and may not get a perfect watertight seal.
Make sure you heater is in the " ON" position before flushing so that the water can flow all round the system.Run the water until clean water comes out.
Good luck with it.
