Series II gearbox woes

Hi all,

The gearbox is downright temperamental when it comes to changing up from second to third - no crunching or grinding, sometimes the gear lever just refuses to go "in". When it does this, second to fourth isn't an option either. The stick's really floppy, now I know BMC calls these things "Puddin' Stirrers" without the remote, but could it be a relatively simple issue with the lever or selector forks?

Thanks

Bernard

Hi
Check the easy ones first,
correct oil, and level.
check gear lever cover screws are secure.
check clutch is releasing correctly.
remove gear stick, check for wear or damage, or spring missing, or broke.
remove side cover, check for selector loose on shafts.

Have you tried double de clutching, some times overcomes selection problems.

Good luck, and regards Win

Hi Win,

Thanks for the reply.

At BMC's suggestion, I changed the oil - this seems to have made reverse selection easier. I used Halfords Classic 20W50, filled to the bottom of the filler thread.

I've had a stab at double de-clutching, it doesn't seem to make any odds. I'm off tomorrow on dog-sitting duties while the wife's in hospital, I can at least have a play with the gear lever. The Workshop Manual's not exactly the clearest on what I should expect, so I may be back soon with pictures!

Regards

Bernard

My series 2 is exactly the same on some journeys it will be reluctant sometimes to go into 3rd on on other journeys it does not happen at all when it happens I usually go to 4th and then back to 3rd but this depends on road conditions if not I will release the clutch and try to engage 3rd again eventually it works

Regard synchromesh as an optional extra and practise double de clutching

Nothing seems to be amiss with the linkages...I'll struggle on trying the double-declutch, but somehow it give me flashbacks to a piano teacher I've spent 40 years trying to forget!!
