The following link may be of interest especially to those persons who want to build a period modified 'A' series engine.

Excellent! In two places they refer to 'special cams' - so presumably converted to twin OHC ???

The 'powerful' 8" drum brakes are interesting -as is the idea of attaching an A series to a VW gearbox - never heard of that before! I wonder if any of these cars still exist?

I do not think that the rules allowed for the fitting of special twin cam heads as everything had to be taken from production cars. A bit like my 1380cc MOD Prod speed hill climb Minor.
See:-

There are some photos of BMC engined cars both front and rear engine versions.

Yes - I can see the standard rocker cover there. I'ts just the double reference to special camS.... Reading a Meccano Mag from 1963 - they talk excitedly about a new season FJ car with 1098 A series engine producing 98 bhp at 7,800 revs using Weber carbS - no pictures though. Although supposedly 1098 - I suspect really a prototype 1071 S type engine with short stroke and big bores .....to get these revs. This engine said to be mated with an unspecified Citroen gearbox.... It also states the car will have 'hydrolastic suspension' copied from the Austin/Morris 1100.... Did this ever actually happen? Mind you - the same mag talks excitedly about a drive in a new FOUR wheel drive SAAB 96 with 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine....they do of course mean FRONT wheel drive....as becomes clear later in the article.

Quite possibly VW gearbox, the Hewland gearboxes used VW casings as the basis for their gearboxes for quite a while I believe.
