Rear Leaf Springs

I have thought for a while that my rear leaf springs seem a little flat, would very much appreciate what you think ! I took the car to a garage recently and was told ' your rear end is too low ' ( how charming! ) Having spent last night reading the thousands of post on this subject, I have the impression from many of you that putting new springs on is a waste of time due to poor quality springs, they go flat quickly! Should i bother? ps I have no bump stops! I dont think they were on when I got the car from a well known Minor restoration company but i suppose they could have been knocked off?

You MUST fit bump stops - by all means shorten them slightly - but they must be present to prevent damage to the dampers - and the chassis legs! You can fit longer rear shackles to lift the car slightly. 1" longer lifts the car by 1/2"...... I wouldn't go any longer than that.

What type of Minor do you have?

The time when springs have flattened to the point of being DEAD,is when the rear shackle begins to hit the chassis leg,the spring lengthens as it flattens, with a full load, have a look at where the rear shackle is in relation to the leg, bounce on the rear and if the shackle looks as though it would hit.Time to change or lengthen the shackle,But as BMC says you must have a bump stop fitted, even with a new spring.
Many are of the opinion that it is better to have your old springs retempered,or fit known good second hand ones. But I fitted new ones to mine and have had no trouble, except that they were too stiff at first but have settled down now. Mind that was 5 years ago mybe better quality then.
