The speedo operation is very simple: drive unit in gearbox - flexible drive shaft (cable) to speedo - speedo. The usual cause of failure is a broken cable, but if the problem arose after changing the gearbox, it is quite likely that the cable has not been refitted correctly at the gearbox end. When swapping boxes, it is usually necessary to remove the drive gear from the old box and put it into the new one.

Follow the cable down to the gearbox (left hand side) and try undoing the large knurled nut that secures the cable. Make sure that the centre core of the cable is properly engaged in the drive gear, and then do the nut up again. Good luck.

Is it a Marina box? If so - may need a special cable.

Hi-standard engine and gear box. Steve has already tried to reifit the cable. Into the gear box but no luck

Is the drive gear present in the gearbox? I assume the cable is ok turning at both ends...

It's not unknown for the 'scroll' inside the gearbox to come loose.......

The "scroll" inside the gearbox can slip sometimes, I presume to avoid problems if the cable is bent too much.

Mine started working on its own after making sure the cable was as straight as possible and not caught in anything. (when using a bigger battery, it can get caught between the top of the battery and the transversal bar on the bonnet)
