Replacement Wood and floor sections

Post by MsRose »

Pretty much sure that my new little traveller is 2/3rds rotten!!

With regards to the floor do I have to buy it in four sections or is there a panel made that makes it a replacement with two panels? The B posts are also shot as well as the front passenger chassis leg.

I also need to know where to get the wooden sections from. A few of the bits are very rotten and any good looking piece has soft parts in one spot or another.

I cannot weld, and more to the point it appears that it needs someone knowledgeable to do this. Can anyone recommend someone in the Worcestershire/Herefordshire area that could do this for me? I would much rather leave the floor and sill welding to an expert.

Have a look at the book "Morris Minor Traveller" (available from Club Merchandise) which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this variant. Steve Foreman t/as Woodies http://www.morriswoodwork.co.uk makes all the timber sections, and can also fit and arrange welding. His timber is sold by a number of Minor Specialist traders. Also consider http://www.travellertimbers.co.uk. There are other specialists, but the above two are the main suppliers of wood. If you join the club then you will receive the magazine "Minor Matters" that has advertisements from most of the major players. Try http://www.morrisminorspares.co.uk/ to see a typical range of panels that are available. Good luck with the car.

It sounds like an extreme restoration - are you sure it is wise (economic?) to take on such a big job - when you say you can't weld? Be sure to survey the car thoroughly before starting any work - rather than realise later that it's too big a job. This is not meant to sound negative - it is just realistic. Many restorations are started - sadly some fall by the wayside, with much time/money/effort lost by the owner.

Thank you for the pointers and also for the wise words.

This is the way I see it, but of course you lot are the ones that have been through it all, so I may be VERY wrong. The car is complete......nothing missing. I hate not doing things properly first time around and so that is why I would much rather replace the whole floor. I don't want to have to patch every year for MOT's. The car runs and drives. It has no brakes. The mechanical side of things are not a worry to me. So, even if the whole underside was replaced would it make it uneconomical?

I have read on the forum somewhere that the cost of having a floor put in with labour can be around £1000. I can have the welding done at my own garage, but we specialise in Porsche, Audi, BMW and VW.......not my little old Traveller. My Husband has said that he will do the welding for me, but he's trying not to get too involved as being a Mechanic he can tend to take over the jobs, rather than show me how to do it :D

I'm a very determined person and will happily do as much as I can, I'm not a mechanic, but I've rebuilt two basket case vehicles and my quad and so with help and advice from you lovely people, I'm sure that my new little traveller will be on the road at some stage.

Welcome.

Take a look in the Restoration section?. NeilMG and Taupe currently have threads running which show the nut and bolt restoration of a Traveller which you may find interesting.

May I suggest you join the Club (if you haven't already) http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?key=Membership
The bi monthly magazine will give you the contact for local branches, list of rallies/events over the year and also adverts from all the traders who support the Minor and from where you can get parts.

If you have access to all the garage equipment etc - and are willing to learn welding - then it will be feasible. New timber comes in complete side sections - and that will probably be the way to go. It won't just be 'floors' of course - the sill structures will almost certainly need replacement, and the front chassis legs etc - so a complete strip down and rebuild will be on the cards. And yes NeilMG thread is a real eye-opener and shows just what can be done, and how to do it ! Good luck with it..
