please can anyone tell me the reason why people hide the numberplate when a car is up for sale thanks

Some people might want to clone the car, or the car might have been off the road for a long time as I went to see a MG last year and was surposed to be on the road but when I got there I checked the reg on the DVLA website it had been off the road since 1997.

Also stops just anybody finding out where a moggie lives. There are those who would look to steal them!

As mentioned about cloning, a few years back the local DVLNI contacted the club as there had been 2 minors taxed with the same reg number! Both cars were inspected by a club official, one was a lovely shiney restored car and the other a hand painted rough one. The rough car was the proper car for the reg.

Suprised how easily it is for me to note down vehicle details, most don't ask
WHO I am and WHY I am noting their vehicles' details - is worrying.

I read somewhere on here about thefts from stalls at the last
National Rally, so not everyone attending these events are honest
genuine enthusiasts.

Keep your car locked at all times.

Sounds a bit brutal perhaps, but better safe than sorry!!

How does someone find out where a car lives by the reg number?

Obscuring the reg number in an advert etc would prevent anyone trawling for a reg number on a similar car to theirs, so they can't go stealing petrol (drive offs) with your reg number. You'll only know when the old bill come round feeling yer collar

ball & chain plus a black bag marked SWAG.

It still won't make it any easier for people to recognise you...

Certainly NOT me if the bag is full of sunvisors, headlamp peaks,over-riders
& hubcaps!!

You watch, they'll be fifty to sixty people at this years national dressed like that now!

On the subject of crime....

You'd think the inhabitants of Midsomer would get wise

You might just have missed the point of drama. However, when I did A level English we were taught about the "willing suspension of disbelief". I lost my suspension of disbelief in "Last Tango in Halifax", when the old chap's daughter was supposed to be changing the clutch in her Landrover - by leaning into the engine from the bonnet with a spanner!

Drivewasher, If you know how (and I'm not going to explain how!) you can get the registration details from DVLA for a small fee. Chances are this is where the mog lives

Yes but you have to give a valid reason for requesting it.

And somebody bad enough to nick cars won't be able to tell a plausible lie?
