Hi guys,

Was wondering if anyone new what the problem with my 1960 morris is I believe that it is a problem with the fuel pump as the previous owned said he thought there was an intermittent fault with the fuel pump as it clicks loudly and the other day I took it out for a run and it went fine started well but slowed down to turn round a corner and it cut out and had to wait a while until it started again I believe it stopped pumping fuel for some reason I could be wrong it could be nothing to do with the fuel pump could someone please advise me on what i should do

Do a search on the forum... top right hand corner and most of the "usual" issues are covered.

Don't forget to remove the negative battery lead before you start messing with the fuel pump.Fuel and a spark can lead to bigger problems than you have at present.

If it cut out "suddenly " it's more likely to be electrical.i.e.dirty points under the delicate plastic cover.A quick clean up with emery paper / sand paper will get you going for a while.If the points look really burnt and knackered then replace with a new set of points.No need to buy a complete new pump.

If the car "spluttered " to a halt it might be a clogged up filter in the base of the pump.It can be cleaned up and reused ( if not damaged ) but I'd have a new washer ready before removing, so that it doesn't leak on reassembly.Read up the section in the work shop manual and have a go.

Simple test when this happens is to give the pump a clout with the starting handle - if it starts clicking away furiously - then that was the problem. In which case - as above - clean the filter - and clean (or renew) the points in the pump.

Your problem could also be ignition related, from the symptoms it could be either. What do you think Roy
As others have said clean the fuel pump points and filter first, then check the pump is pumping fuel.
As a matter of interest how long does the car run for before stopping? 2-3 mins should be about right to empty the float bowl of fuel.

And 20 minutes is about long enough to overheat a knackered condenser...... I agree - it could be either. Pump test is to have it pump a gallon into a can -and report how long that takes......
