Returning to the Minor fold

Hi all,

Following a busy couple of years since we sold our Minor and - most importantly - as we now have a garage, we're about to take the plunge and buy another Minor.

We're looking at an unmolested 4-door Series 2 which sounds just the job. I'm aware of all the caveats regarding feeble output from the 803cc engine and parts availability, but is there anything I need to be especially watchful for? We previously had a 1965 1000.

Welcome back....yes - the feeble output will break your heart after a 948. But of course you can upgrade to 948 (or 1098/1275) mechanicals - without ruining the car and it can be returned to standard any time . As ever - RUST is what you need to find and avoid !

Hi Roy,

Nice to see you here again too. :)

The Morris will be a second car for weekend use, so not too much "white knuckle" driving on motorways. If we do plump for the example we're looking at then my biggest concern will be the indicators, I think the car just has its stock trafficators. I'll be looking at discretely making the original sidelights flash rather than fitting Minor 1000 units, which I think would look badly out of place on such an early car.

I might be looking at an interesting 200 mile drive home in the coming days! :o

The popular method is to mount Traveller rear indicators on brackets under the bumpers front and rear. They can be used off the same trafficator switch, see http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Tech Info, Trafficator and Indicator wiring diagram

Or these work well as they are a bit smaller and less obtrusive. Obviously you can make up the kit yourself, but the Rubbolite light units are very neat:

Thanks for the replies with wiring suggestions - I need to have a good ponder about what to do.

It looks like we're taking the plunge with the Series 2. The car's coming up to us for appraisal (!!), so at least I'm spared the prospect of getting it home.

I suspect I'm on the trail of the legendary rocking-horse poo here, but might I be able to get hold of a Series 2 boot badge with the built-in reflector...?

The boot badge is ordered, just need to order a matching clip-on mirror for the passenger side and install discrete indicators.

The car came with a contemporary copy of the Workshop Manual which contains a few letters from the Cowley works to the manual's original owner. Imagine my disappointment when I realised they didn't relate to our car! I didn't know that the screenwasher was an after-market add-on - an old Tudor advertisement leaflet dropped out of the manual.

Looks great, you could think about making a brake and indicator bar to sit inside the rear window, just unplug when showing the car and has the advantage of being in the line of sight of modern drivers :)
