Track-rod ball-joint gaiter clips

I am rather embarrassed to ask this question, because it seems trivial and makes me look like a dope.

Anyway... I have been trying to fit the type that ESM supplies. It consists of just over two turns of flattened springy wire which is supposed to clamp the top of the rubber gaiter in place.

I battled with one of these for far too long and gave up.  I tried a variety of techniques but none came near working.

What is the trick to getting these things to fit?

Should I just throw them away and use very thin cable ties?

Don

Don't be embarrassed, we're all here to learn. I've bought some of those to have ready, but not had ot fit nay yet, so can't speak from experience; but it might be worth asking ESM as they do have a workshop associated with them.

Fit the wire clip around the body of the ball joint. fit the gaiter then just try winding the wire on from below so that you do not have to go over the gaiter and possibly damage it.

Or is it deliberate to see how many notice, or possibly a piece written for the Gruniad (If you don't know about Lord Gnome and his organ, then don't worry about that last bit). :-?

I knew that it was some Britsh stuff that I'm not familiar with and not sure if I want to be.
Thanks, Phil, for the link, but I think I'll pass.

Now...back the the gaiter clips... :)

They are quite stiff and not conducive to being manipulated. They were certainly designed by someone who never tried to use them.

My latest thinking is that I will cut one turn off them to make them more manageable. They will still have more than enough staying power to hold the tops of the gaiters.

What you need is a cone of something (like a cv one) which you can pop over the T.R.E and just push the clip down it?

You can use stainless cable ties :D
