engine number query

As can be seen in the picture of the original log book it seems as if the engine has been replaced with a 1275cc, yet the car now has a 948cc engine and on the current V5C the engine number is shown as the original, and I am unable to to find any plate on the engine with a number on it. So I am wondering if there is anyway of confirming if the engine in the car is the cars original or not?

There won't be any way to check if it is the 'original' 948 engine - if the little plate is missing. To confirm a 948 - it will have '950' cast on the nearside of the block. Just make a new plate typed with the numbers (you need mirror types to do that) - or even type them directly on the block (standard types for that!) - or just leave it 'numberless'. there is no obligation to have an engine number.

Thanks for that, it does have 950 cast on it so it is a 948cc. I will probably just stamp the engine with the number then.

I have to say that '19250' is not a complete original engine number anyway.....

Wonder why anyone would bother converting to a 1275 then revert to a 948 lump?

Maybe they broke the 1275......and couldn't afford/justify rebuilding it - or realised they didn't need the extra power (and increased fuel consumption) - or just a wish for originality.

Could be, though I'd hardly say the 1275 increases the fuel consumption by much (if at all); I regularly achieve around 38mpg out of mine, with mostly short runs of 7 miles or so, with quite a few hilly and twisty country roads to negotiate.
No worse than the original 1098cc engine.

Well either way that is all that is on the V5C and the chassis plate.

Was the engine number recorded on the 'chassis plate' on the older cars?

Have you done turret/engine mounting checks?

Not a problem more of a query since the logbook seems to state a change to a 1275cc engine
