Refitting door

Post by Trafalgar blue »

When replacing the boxing plate & undersills, when can I remove the door brace & try the door back on? Bearing in mind I also have the lower A post cut away so there's no lower hinge holes. Thanks

Sounds to me like you need to finish the A post. When you make the repair panel for the bottom hinge, just tack it in place. Then hang the door, if you need to adjust the repair panel to allow the door to fit nicely the tacks will be easy to remove, or allow some bending. You could even fit the door now, wedge it in place with the right gaps, then fit the bottom hinge panel. You'll need to consider your particular situation.

Can I do that before fitting the front lower sill so that I can check the position of that? Boxing plate is fully welded in. Many thanks

if you have fitted the boxing plate, then I assume that at least the inner undersill is also fitted, and that the main inner sill is sound and welded to the boxing plate/floor/front to back. If so its highly unlikely that the frame will move without the outer undersill in place .and it is a better plan to fit the outer undersill with the door fitted,so that the outer edges can be lined up with the bottom of the door. I have seen a few rebuilds where the door bottom either sticks out too far or hits the sill edge, because the outer undersill has been misplaced.Remember to take into account that the door must also line up with the sill finisher/closing plate edge.Bolt the finisher onto the undersill to get the correct placement. Then weld it on.

If the above is the case then fit the door, get that lined up and then fit the outer undersill. cheers

Ok the rear undersill to floor repair panel is welded in but the front one isn't. I'll have a look to see if I can fit the door with the brace still in place, if not I'll just have to remove it

from that I take its that its a four door, the rear section boxing panel welded to the B post and C post/rear wing,is that right, If you haven't welded the inner undersill and boxing panel at the front from B to A post, then I would leave the bracing on untill that part is done,it dosent need the boxing panel/undersill welded to the A post because all will be held by those bits being attached to the inner sill and inner wing. But it depends how much you have taken out .. A photo would be a better way for us to advise. If most of the sill section has been left in and is in fair condition then no need to brace really. Its only essential if you are removing the whole or most of the sill area, thereby letting the bottom of the door gaps to spread, the top ovbiously can't go anywhere.

Hi kennant, it's a 2 door, the whole boxing plate has been replaced. I've welded in this repair panel -http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... a144595318
I've prepped everything ready for this pane- http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... a144595318 To go in. As I said I have cut the lower part of the A post rest for this to go in- http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... a144595318 so I have no lower bolt holes for the door hinge. I also need to replace/repair this panel - http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... a144595318
Thanks

If the boxing panel is welded from front to back onto the undersill and inner main sill, then as long as the main sill(The one inside the car) is still welded to the inner front wing, then nothing will move even if the A panel is not welded to the boxing or undersill Put a photo of the repair section on if you can. Its not the A panel that causes the problem because it can be pushed about to fit. Its when the sill section is missing then the whole car sags and the gap opens up.

If the top hinge is intact fit the door to that, then you should be able to line up the lower hinge panel, with a few spot welds to hold it. Looking at the photo you should be able to spot weld it on with the door shut, since it looks like you can access it from the front of the A post.Looks good.

Lower A panel tacked on & front lower sill/outer sill/sill finisher & over sill all temporarily held in place to see how it all lines up. I'm having a bit of trouble lining the door up, it's out a bit st the top & the bottom[frame]Image[/frame]

I woudn't worry about the top,so long as the door(metal bit) sits right with the front wing, Simply wind window down and pull the top of the door frame inwards. You will find that you can get quite a lot of movement,at the top of the door frame, enough to close up a small out of alignment.Don't do it with the window up. :D
