1963 1098 cc Traveller.

I managed to break the now brittle rubber hose that fits between the rocker cover and the base of the carburettor. It seemed to be a funny sort of 'S' shape. But I cannot find it in any online parts listing. All seem to show a breather hose that goes from the rocker cover to the air filter. I don't think my car is modified for any performance reason, all reasonably standard, and I can see a possible connection to the air filter that is completely unused. This set up has been working on the car for some 20 years so it must be right mustn't it?

I have tried a repair with some standard rubber hose but find that one end (carb) needs a smaller opening than the other (rocker cover), also it's kinked too much to allow good air flow. Can anyone help with a part number or suggest a supplier please?

I had exactly the same problem, I used the standard hose that goes to the air filter but my car is leaking oil so off to the ESM website...

Hadn't seen it in any parts listing either.

Your 63 car has been fitted with a later (better!) carb. So you will need to find a hose that is stiff enough to take the bends without kinking!

What exactly is the effect this has on the carburettor? Is it a faster form of warming up? Does the fitting have to be very airtight?

Do I need to use it at all?

It's simply a better way of sucking the fumes out of the engine - which helps prevent oil leaks. The later carb also has better control of the fuel level in the float bowl.

Just to say thanks to all contributors, hose now in place. It was bending over and flatting itself but I found that a tie wrap held it in place for a nice smooth curve, and now the tie wrap's off it is holding this shape by itself.

NB Exhaust manifold cracked completely at the exhaust flange while on the A1 6 miles away from my son's home. Thanks to Charlie in Watford, who had a spare and was kind enough to sell it to me for a reasonable price.

Well done Terry - and Charlie! Quite a few reports of manifolds cracking like that recently, and not something I had ever heard of before!
