popping

This has only started today!
When driving and I lift off the accelerator, you can hear a very noisy "popping" noise coming from the exhaust.
What could be causing this? there are no holes in the exhaust, and it is not loose.
I have topped up the carb with oil, and I am on electronic ignition.
thanks

Have you filled up with lemonade recently?

This usually indicates unburnt fuel in the exhaust system, check
that your carb piston drops with a soft plop when you lift it by
hand.

Also, check the exhaust manifold gasket... I had this trouble a while ago - thought me valves were on the way out (only that was some time after...

) but it was just an air-leak at the manifold! ;)

:(
on closer inspection the noise is been casued by over 1 inch of play on the drive shaft, and it sounds like the rear diff has somthing wrong with it
I think this may be expensive, and might put Harriet off the road

Explain "one inch play on the drive shaft" please. Do you mean the
prop shaft? if so then is it a collapsed universal joint(there is one
at each end of the prop shaft). This would usually introduce vibration
at any sort of speed and is easily rectified. If you do buy new
universal joints then get the ones with a grease nipple, they will last
for ever.

opps, yeah prop shaft

the universal joint looks ok, the noise seems to be comming from the rear axel, which is why I think it might be the diff

If you had 1" of axial play the car would be shaken to pieces above 40mph therefore I would guess you meant 1" of radial free play at the circumference of the prop shaft (30 or 40 degrees?)
That is likely to give a 'clang' more than a pop, but isn't a sign of imminent failure.

If you can`t tell if the noise ie exhaust or prop/axle have you tried a passenger in the back to assist with where the noise is coming from but I am suprised as exhaust noise is fairly distinctive.
