I've looked through the post but can't find an answer to this - After you have rebuilt an SU carb for a 1098 c.c replacement engine is there any rule of thumb of how many turns back from 'fully tightened' you should make to be in the ball park for correct mixture adjustment. ie How best to set up a carb to get the car to run?

Come back two complete revolutions from fully tightened.That should be enough to get you up and running.
A dab of typist correction fluid on one of the flats will help you keep count of far you turned !

Have you touched / moved the distributer as well , i.e. is timing likely to be slightly out as well ?

does the manual say turn the nut 12 flats does that equate to 2 turns 2 cold to go outside and look

It really doesn't matter - there is no way of knowing - any advice is just a vague starting point. You then need to set it all up properly once the engine has warmed up.

Yup, hexagonal nut means six flats to the turn.

The tip - from an old man down the pub - that finally worked was to polish the inside parts if the damper chamber with Brasso ( I had cleaner them with petrol) the car then started and had been running ever since.

Yes - if the piston is sticking that's the cure, but never anything more abrasive than Brasso!

12 flats worked for me recently ,as a starting point it's pretty good
can you still buy Brasso ?

Of course! How else would I shine up the brass and copper on our Locos! But T cut will do just as good a job on the SU bell.....
