Hi

My 67 4dr saloon pulls to the left on braking...so guess that something is going on with brake linings...? Any ideas, please..? DIY solution, or garage bill? Would appreciate some advice...

Thanks

Make sure that the brakes are adjusted evenly, check to see that the shoes & drums are in good condition and not contaminated by a weeping cylinder.

If that fails then check you have no air in the lines by bleeding the front brakes.

As per Cam's suggestion it is likely to be a stuck piston or brake fluid contamination (leaking cylinder). With lack of servicing, in severe cases you may have worn through the shoe completely, or the brakes may have random bits running around inside causing it to lock up easily etc..
Air in the system is unlikely to cause pulling to one side...

Thanks - appreciate advice.

So, I should look at b'shoe and, if needed, clean away debris...is this the way to go now?

If b'shoe is worn through - I will need to replace shoe...? or...?

If former - can anyone suggest best source of supply/ possible cost?

cheers

Bull Motif are a good supplier 01386 831755, other frequently recommended suppliers for mail order parts are ESM, Leadbetters and so on (it's a long list)
The owners club magazine is full of supplier adverts offering club discounts etc..

Wheel cylinders are approx £10 each, and shoes about £10 per set.
If it needs repair and you have it done by a local garage, don't be surprised if their parts cost 2 or 3 times more money + VAT so it can be worth to buy the parts yourself.

For DIY: It is not recommended to breathe-in brake fluid dust - though unless you work in a clutch and brake repair centre doing it every day it's hardly much worth worrying about.

Finn,

Just a reminder - if you need to fit a new brake lining/shoe, don't fit one - replace all four shoes for the front or rear axle (as appropriate). Don't try to economise by fitting just one shoe. It's probably best to buy the shoes and linings together (it is possible to buy just the friction linings and rivet them to the shoes - but the cost saving isn't really worth it).

As Cam said dont forget the drums as they can warp.
