re Clutch pedal position
Hi all, need some help. Trundling along nicely putting my '56 4 door back together after a home-renovation. Re-attached the clutch pedal (new clutch plate and thrust bearing) and when the pedal is adjusted to the acceptable level of play (1-2 inches of travel) the pedal position is much higher than the brake. When adjusted to match the brake pedal position, the clutch travel is not enough ! The clutch return spring is the correct length. Am I being stupid here ! The linkage adjustment rod is most of the way up on the thread i.e towards the rear end of the car. I would have thought that a new shiny clutch would have seen the adjustment rod at the other end. Would love anyone's views. Thanks all. Guess what, it's not raining today........yet !

Oooh, just found this link http://www.mmoc.org.uk/memberlist.php?m ... ile&u=5793 that discusses the fact that the floor (gearbox cover and M/C) need to be back in first to "hold" the pedal down. Will re-fit as well and re-assess.

I suspect that you have you replaced the brake master cylinder or brake linkage as part of your home renovation ? Adjust the clutch to give the right play making sure that the pedal comes right back against the underside of the floor; then adjust the brake master cylinder adjustment rod to bring the brake pedal into alignment with the clutch pedal. Make sure though that you have enough thread in the brake linkage yokes!!!

Thanks so much, I wonder if that's why my new master cylinder and entirely new braking system has a fair amount of travel too despite careful bleeding !

There should be something, possibly rubber, on the plate on the clutch pedal that rests on the underside of the floor.
Worth replacing with something as it seals the cabin from the engine bay/outside.
