Exhaust

Post by Gordi »

Hey guys and gals
Hoping you've all had a great few days off... And are not one of the unfortunate folk without power or a home :(
I'm the new owner of a 69 traveller ( Jeff ) he will be my daily vehicle after some minor upgrades. Alternator etc
Have been driving him about the past few days ( LOVING IT) however the exhaust is really loud . It has a single stainless job

I have been scouring threads for exhaust systems tried and tested by other users but find I am lost in other threads of chat lol

I've been looking at the maniflow twin box ,would having two boxes make the old boy quieter ? I have dogs that I will take with
Me on days out. At the moment they seem terrified by the growling exhaust which when sailing along is a tad painful lol...
Being a mini and van driver I'm used to a noisy car, Jeff is very vocal !!!
Any advice appreciated

Stainless systems do tend to be a bit louder, they "ring" a bit more.
I've found a curved trim helps with the amount of noise that get into the car especially on a Traveller as the rear bumper seems to reflect the noise into the car.

the noise dies down a bit when there is some carbon down the pipe

You could also try one of those motobike mufflers you slide in the end of the pipe. Can't remember what they are called though.

I think the stainless systems 'burn out' internally. Mine started out ok but soon became a LOT louder. I fitted a 3 branch (MG 1100) manifold with straight through Cooper S silencer ------- it's even louder...... I think 'big bore' exhausts really need two silencers. You could try adding a second silencer (Sprite MK I may suit) and see if that helps.
