I want to convert from a dynamo to an alternator as I use my moggy daily.
There are many conversion kits on the market and of the couple of places I have contacted they suggest that its a moderately easy task for the amateur mechanic.

Before I go ahead is there anything I need to know about converting from dynamo to alternator?

Yes thats OK, I put one on my Series 2 and if you follow the instructions easy peasy.
This might help on the mecanical side.

The band which holds the Ignition coil requires enlarging, (if yours is mounted as shown) I welded a peice in as you can see here.

On the electrical side just follow the instructions.

The car MUST be negative earth - and make sure the pulleys line up perfectly.

and make sure the belt is not too tight otherwise the water pump will fail

when I did mine ,rather then refit the coil on top of the alternator,I mounted it on the inner wing.Therefore moving it away from the heat of the engine,coils dont like being hot.

Exactly - inner wing is far better - no heat and no vibration.

I have done a alternator conversion and mounted the coil on the inner wing see picture, but I will need to move it for the servo installation.[frame][/frame]

You can also see where I have taped up all the old wires that are not required and the new connection to the solenoid

Better to mount the coil vertically (upwards!). Servo? For a wee car like a Minor - really NOT needed if the brakes are in good condition - and it certainly won't make the brakes work any better!

so was mine untill I fitted alternator and found that you need to remake the strap,easier to fit it on the inner wing.Originality goes out of the window as soon as you convert.

I mounted my coil on inner wing, near bulkhead, for the same reason. I mentioned the coil on top indicating it suffered no harm.

There is the option to recycle the original dynamo mounting bracket to allow the coil to remain where it was and no need to extend the coil strap.[frame][/frame]

This also leaves a rather nice space for the servo if you like that sort of thing [frame][/frame]

Well for what its worth, on top of the alternator will keep it nice and dry, and it does, when you go through those deep puddles, mine is the original from the car so its 58 years young. Those Minor Engineers knew what they were doing.
