918 sidvalve engine rebuild

Hi All,
I've just had the side vavle engine apart in Brian my ongoing lowlight resto. the results weren't great

. It needs a regrinding of the crank and new bearings and a new piston ring( one top ring is broken ) but it looks like I'll have to buy a set.
I don't suppose anyone out there has an engine for sale running or in better condition than mine ? it seems like the lack of oil filter on the UHSM 2 engine has really knackered the bearings.
Cheers,
Will

What size of pistons are fitted? Think I have a few plus 10 rings from my rebuild.

still standard, but it looks to have had a new set of rings fitted in the past judging by the stepped top ring.
Thanks for the offer though

3 or 4 ring pistons? Standard bore rings should be easy enough to get as the ex army engines were always re sleeved to standard. Try MMOC spares.
Try a magnet in the sump plug to collect the swarf

Hi Mike, she's running 4 ring pistons, I've sent an E-mail to bryan this morning.
Magnetic sump plug seems like a good idea, but how would you go about making one ?

let me know what size you end up with , you may need a rebore, I have some spare pistons with and without rings high and low compression. Regards smithskids.

Thanks smithkids,
HOPEFULLY a rebore won't be required as the bores look in good condition, but only a measure up will reveal there true condition... MAYBE I should just sack this whole side valve engine in and fit an XPAG....

only joking
