Exhaust Hanging Points

Hello all,

After a tedious afternoon trying to fit a new mild steel exhaust, I cannot get enough clearance where the pipe bends through the front chassis gap, its hard up against the body on the left hand side (as you look at the exhaust standing in front of the car). This prevents me getting a proper seal at the manifold.

When I took the old one off it had three hanging points: 1. just behind the silencer, 2. in front of the axle and 3. Right at the back of the car using the same bolt as the bumper support bar at the boot floor.

Are any of these correct? From reading previous posts I should be using two either side of the axle. I would be eternally grateful if someone could post a picture of where each mount goes and what it should look like, before I lose any more hair.

The front mounting point is to the front of the bend that goes over the axle, attached to the body near the bottom of the slope where the floor pan goes up beneath the rear seat. The read mounting is near the back of the pipe, attaching to the boot floor where it rises to mount the petrol tank. There are normally only the two mountings.

Compare the new pipe with the one that you took off. I have recently seen several stainless steel examples where the bending is not correct, making it impossible to get the pipe correctly aligned - it either fits the manifold and hits the edge of the cutout or the cross member, or it clears the body, but won't join the manifold. I haven't been able to ascertain which manufacturer is to blame. I do know that a new mild steel pipe from ESM fitted perfectly without any problems.

Check the engine is sitting correctly - mounts in good order etc. But you may very well need to 'adjust' the bend on the pipe - it MUST NOT touch (or even approach) the edges of the body.
